The Jeweller

What is your name?

Diana.

Where did you grow up?

In Madrid.

What do you love about jewellery?

The magic of fire and the possibility to transform metal as I wish.

When did you discover your love for jewellery?

When I was 18 I discovered the career of a jeweller and it was a great luck for me, from this moment I have fallen in love with it. Since I was a child I had always made earrings, bracelets, rings with different materials. Jewelry is something that has caught my attention, always.

How did you become a jewellery designer?

I was very lucky to start my training in the workshop of a master jeweler with whom I could learn the magic of jewellery making in a completely handmade and traditional way. At the same time, I was studying at the Arts’ School and at the European Institute of Design where I could finish my training in this field.

Jewellery Design

Describe your style, what is most characteristic about your jewellery design?

I love geometric and pure shapes, simple lines. I try to make pieces that transmit simplicity and that are well resolved technically. I like to try new materials, to mix silver with bronze or enamels to add color to the pieces.

Which music genre describes dh joyas's jewellery best?

I had never asked myself this question, I do not know what the musical genre would be exactly but it would be nice music, with good lyrics, music that goes beyond the commercial and means something, that tries to provoke a sensation.

If you could choose one song that describes best your jewellery, which one would it be?

Little Lion Man of Mumford and Sons. I don’t know why that song has something that shakes me up everytime that I hear it.

What is your favourite piece of dh joyas?

My favourite piece are the earrings of ¨Estructuras¨collection. It’s my first collection, and it’s the only collection that I’m still making and I will make because it’s the most representative collection of dh joyas.

Which exciting things are coming up for your dh joyas? New lines planned?

I don't have a clear idea yet, but I’m working on a Christmas collection, something inspired by Barbara Hepworth, an English sculptor.

In the Studio

How does a typical day at work look like?

Usually, I do not have two days the same at work. I love to start the day in my studio with some tea and enjoying the music from my radio. Little by little I start with my routine... reading the mails, newspapers, checking the social networks.... After that, it depends on the day, I prepare new pieces or review castings, on other days I model in 3D or make sculpturs in a small format.

Without any doubt, what I enjoy the most, it is the time that I spend on the workbench.

How do you source & make your jewellery?

Everytime that I can, I prefer working directly with the metal, usually silver. I follow the whole process from the copper alloy to the final finish. Other times I model the parts on the computer. The truth is, that for a long time, I resisted 3D modeling but it is more and more present in my day.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I´ve always been interested in architecture, for me it is the best source of inspiration.

Last but not least

Ring, Earrings, Necklace, Bracelet, or Bangle?

When I create a new collection, I always start with the ring. It's my favorite piece followed by the earrings. I think if the ring works, the rest of the pieces will do, too.

Mountains or beach holiday?

Difficult decision, I choose the north of Spain where you can enjoy the beach and the mountains at the same time.

What's your favourite city?

The city that has impressed me most is Istanbul. I love its contrasts, the colors and the air is full of spices. I think it has many amazing corners to discover.

Do you have a favourite jewel that comes with you on all your travels?

I have to say that I usually don't wear jewelry; the earrings, that always come with me, are from the collection Estructuras.

On my travels I usually wear the Eclipse ring, it is a very special ring for me. It is made with the technique of Kum Boo.
